Special lessons and activities I do with my students when I teach English Literature. I find different ways to connect it to their world, let them reflect upon issues in their lives and turn it into relevant information for them.
Lesson plans:
✅ Introduction to literature- my first poem
introduction to literature

TRANSFORMing information INto knowledge
It is well known that after we teach a literary work for a while, we need to begin every lesson with a quick recap... or else most students won't know or remember what the text was about. Instead of my traditional recap, I started reviewing it with the help of the students. In other words, every lesson, I start with one of the creative summaries which was made by one of the groups in class. As a result, they have to update their summary after every lesson.
Their assignment is to create their own creative summary of the play or story we study in class and present it in the beginning of the lesson. In other words, I let them find a creative way to review the learning material to their peers.
They do this task in groups of 2-3 (based on their knowledge of the work)
I let them choose one of these ideas in order to create it. They can come up with a creative idea of their own. As long as it is different from another group.
This way, they learn about each other's strengths, cooperate, learn how to manage new tools and practice the muscle of creativity.
It can also be done after the first part of the story\play or as a summative assessment for the whole story.

10. Design a Game- Make a game based a play. It can be a online board game, guessing game, or other idea. Write step-by-step directions and rules that are easy to follow.
11. Walk in the characters' shoes- prepare monologues in which you tell the events so far from the characters' point of view.
12. Create a brochure- design a travel brochure to entice visitors. Include maps, drawings, photos, text, bulleted lists, and attention-grabbing section titles.
14. List characters' traits- Write down the names of four or more characters from your book and list

A Summer's Reading
Pre- Reading Activity
Boroughs רבעים
New York City is composed of five boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. Each borough is a county (מחוז) of New York State
Bernard Malamud
1914 New York – 1986 New York
Malamud’s parents were Russian Jews who had fled tsarist Russia. He was born in Brooklyn, where his father owned a small grocery store. The family was poor. Malamud’s mother died when he was 15 years old, and he was unhappy when his father remarried. He early on assumed responsibility for his handicapped brother.
The story takes place in a New York neighborhood, in the summer, during the Great Depression 1929 - 1940
The phrase “the American Dream”was coined by James Truslow Adams in his 1931 bestseller The Epic of America.
The American Dream: “a dream of a social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature (a person's natural height קומה) of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous (happening by chance מקרי) circumstances of birth or position.”
Barone, Adam AmericanDream.
I begin by reading with my students the first part of the story
I let them paraphrase it. Sometimes I play the audio of the story, stop and explain or ask questions.
The first part ends when George wonders of a good life he would like to have, someday....in the future...
I then ask them to write a paragraph - to define what is a good life for them?
I show them either the following Ted talk which talks about the subject what makes a good life.

Are you a blamer ?
What makes a good life?
Listen to this short clip which explains how education is the first step to break the vicious cycle of poverty...
We summarize the main points of the lecture and discuss George's relationships with his father and sister in the story.
Then we read and explain the rest of the story.
Listen and discuss the main idea and solution

African American female mathematicians who worked at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) during the Space Race.
The Green Book, in full The Negro Motorist (the driver of an automobile) Green Book, The Negro Travelers’ Green Book, or The Travelers’ Green Book, travel guide published (1936–67) during the segregation era in the United States that identified businesses that would accept African American customers.
It listed a variety of businesses—from restaurants and hotels to beauty salons and drugstores—that were necessary to make travel comfortable and safe for African Americans in the period before the Civil Rights Act (law) of 1964 which prohibited discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin.
Rubin "Hurricane" Carter (May 6, 1937 – April 20, 2014) was an American-Canadian middleweight boxer, wrongfully convicted of murder and later released following a petition of habeas corpus (a fundamental right in the Constitution that protects against unlawful and indefinite imprisonment. Translated from Latin it means "show me the body). after serving almost 20 years in prison.
A biographical drama based on the 1853 slave memoirTwelve Years a Slave about a New York State-born free African-American man who was kidnapped in Washington, D.C. by two conmen in 1841 and sold into slavery. Northup was put to work on plantations in the state of Louisiana for 12 years before being released.
The film and novel recount the story of a young white woman and aspiring journalist Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan. The story focuses on her relationship with two black maids, Aibileen Clark and Minny Jackson, during the Civil Rights Movement in 1963 Jackson, Mississippi. In an attempt to become a legitimate journalist and writer, Skeeter decides to write a book from the point of view of the maids, exposing the racism they face as they work for white families. Black domestic workers in 1960s America were referred to as "the help", hence the title of the journalistic exposé, the novel and the film.
Racism VS Prejudice
The film “The Hate U Give” is based on a novel of the same name. It is also based on a true story. In 2009, police officers shot an unarmed black man named Oscar Grant in Oakland, California.
Thomas's book title is derived from THUG (bully) LIFE, not just the name of the late Tupac Shakur's group and the album they recorded, but an acronym for a philosophy: The letters, Tupac explained, stand for “The Hate U Give Little Infants meaning that allowing our children to be subject to violence and hatred.
1820- Klu Klux Klan terrorize and attack African American
1865- end of slavery
1870- the 5th Amendment to the United States Constitution, was confirmed and granted African American men the right to vote, many states in the South implemented various tactics, such as literacy tests, poll taxes, intimidation, and violent acts like lynching, to suppress black voting.
1955- Rosa Parks incident
1963- J.F Kenneday was murdered
1963- President Lyndon B. Johnson enacted the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
It is based on the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches led by Martin Luther King Jr.
The song "Glory" by John Legend and Common, featured in the movie "Selma" (2014), is a powerful anthem that reflects on the Civil Rights Movement and specifically the events surrounding the 1965 Selma to Montgomery marches. Here are some historical events referenced in the song:
Selma to Montgomery marches: a series of civil rights protests that occurred in 1965 in Alabama. They were part of the voting rights movement and aimed to secure equal voting rights for African Americans.
Bloody Sunday: On March 7, 1965, peaceful marchers were attacked by Alabama state troopers as they attempted to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma. The violence was broadcasted nationally, sparking outrage and leading to increased support for the Civil Rights Movement.
Civil Rights Movement: The broader context of the song refers to the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, a struggle for social justice and equality that spanned several decades, particularly in the mid-20th century.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: The song pays tribute to Dr. King, who was a prominent leader in the Civil Rights Movement and played a crucial role in organizing the Selma marches.
Freedom Marches: a series of protests and demonstrations which aimed to end segregation and racial discrimination.
Jim Crow laws: laws which enforced racial segregation in the Southern states.
Rosa Parks- her courageous act of refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Alabama bus in 1955 is a pivotal moment. Parks' action sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott against racial segregation. The boycott lasted for over a year and ultimately led to a Supreme Court ruling that declared segregation on public buses unconstitutional in 1956.
Ferguson- the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014. Michael Brown, an unarmed African American teenager, was fatally shot by a white police officer named Darren Wilson. Brown's death sparked widespread protests and civil unrest in Ferguson and brought national attention to issues of police brutality, racial profiling, and systemic racism in the United States.

After I teach the poem we discuss different "walls" in our lives.
I let them write about an obstacle they are facing. Reflecting upon an obstacle, many times helps solving it... OR I let them write about obstacles they have overcome ("'when they succeeded to break the wall") and help them find their strengths

The Treasure of Lemon Brown
I bring an interesting box to class, " a treasure chest". I keep it closed... every student holds it and shares with the class his definition of treasure- the most important thing in his life, one he can't afford to lose.

Rules Of The Game
I divided the class into 5 groups. Each group had an activity, they had to learn something and then find a creative way to convey it to the class. When every group finished their presentation, everyone applauded. Only then they got a tube from me, inside was a piece of a puzzle. When the whole class finished the assignment they could see the name of the story we are going to read next time we meet.
Thank you ma'am
